Maximized Living Doctor Aaron Miller knows the value of meditation and relaxation for mental and spiritual wellbeing. When practiced on a regular basis, the quality of your life will take on new dimensions.
If you find yourself in a difficult situation, one that is troubling, you may not be able to actually do anything to change the facts. There are, however, some things you can change and they are all within yourself. Give yourself a break from the upset. Take a mini vacation while sitting at your desk or standing in front of that sink full of dirty dishes.
Start by paying attention to your breathing. Fill your lungs with fresh, clean air. Breathe in slowly through your nose, then take at least as long to breathe out through your mouth as you did to take in that air. Rather than blowing out explosively, do it gently, through barely parted lips. Do this 3 to 5 times as preparation, then take in a big, deep breath. Hold it for a count of 5, and then breathe out v-e-r-y slowly as before. As you exhale, close your eyes and imagine that all the tension and upset are leaving your body on the spent breath. Repeat this two to three more times, or until you feel the tension easing up.
Once the grip of upset has eased a bit, do another thing that only you can do for yourself. Change your focus. To do this, think about something that makes you smile, something you love, something that makes your spirits soar. It could be as mundane as the purring of a kitten or as magnificent as the first sight of your new baby. Perhaps it’s sunrise over the mountain or a sunset into the ocean. Embrace the beauty with your heart and soul – and let yourself smile.
